Craggy Range Vineyards
Terry Peabody and his family searched for ten years to find the place and the people that could fulfil a dream – that they could make some of the best wine in the world.

It was this notion of legacy – to create something greater than the here and now – that led Terry Peabody in 1997 to Steve Smith and to the development of Craggy Range. Together they set a plan to buy the best vineyard land, select parcels of grapes grown by the country’s best farmers, and to choose a place for their homes, cellars and country restaurant. Their aim was to make single-vineyard wines – wines that are true expressions of the vineyard’s terroir. And an ambition to make the greatest wines in the land. No small goal and one that is not achieved without considerable effort.

This is a family affair, a legacy born to be passed through the generations.

The Te Muna Road Pinot Noir is a single vineyard wine from the old, stony soils of the higher terrace of the Te Muna Road Vineyard. The Pinot grapes are hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts before spending over a year in small French oak barrels. This is a dark, opulent wine with silken texture and layers of aromatics and flavors.

Bright aromas of cherry, raspberry, dried sage and a hint of smoke make for an enticing nose. On the palate the taut, focused fruit tannin sits seamlessly in this medium weight wine with a silky savory finish.

Our proprietary blend of four varieties gives a true expression of our Gimblett Gravels Vineyard. The proportions of the blend change most vintages to reflect conditions of the year and to ensure that we meet a certain ‘house style’. It is a wine of richness with an abundance of black fruit flavours and a long structured finish complete with dusty tannins of the area.

The 2010 Fletcher Family Vineyard Riesling has intense floral aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle over lime juice and mandarin peel. Light bodied and very crisp with a touch of residual sugar to balance, it gives a long pure finish. Drinking now, it should cellar through 2015+.
